My Grandma, Gloria Gemma died of breast cancer in 2002 after her Doctor misdiagnosed a lump on her breast. The lump that he was watching metastasized and spread through her lungs, liver and brain. She was young at 70 when this happened. She was and still is the center of our family. We all expected her to be around a long time and meet some of her not born yet grandchildren and great grandchildren. She lived for family and making sure that everyone was on the right path, safe and supported by the family at all times. When she died of cancer I was very upset and did not understand a process called mourning. To deal with the feelings, I turned to alcohol for a while and grew very bitter. It wasn't a fix for me so I sought counseling and was taught about grieving. I was not alone in my family, there were a lot of mixed emotions. My mother, 1 of 9 siblings that have a total of 23 children, felt a wide variety of emotions as a result of losing Grandma G. Uncle Anthony had a great idea to start a breast cancer foundation in her name. My mother, Maria Gemma Corcelli, the Executive Director of the Foundation has led and overseen the Foundation for the past 12 years. She has been helping Breast Cancer Survivors and their families heal themselves from the gross impact that this horrible disease causes. The foundation has a annual event the first week of October each year when many family and friends come to downtown Providence for 1 day or 3 days of fun events. We are working together to support women and their families struggling with the disease and looking for support. We also use this time to celebrate the fight over breast cancer and to remember our lost loved ones. I started a team to run the 5K called the Florida Alternative Investment Association. We currently have 2 runners. Brian Valero and I are going to race at the beginning of October and I am asking for your financial support that will be donated to Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation and the gift is 100% tax deductable. I would also love for you to run in the race even more. I have gotten back into running and I am pushing myself to get into shape for this race. I hope that you can help me raise some money and I would like even more to have you running alongside of me or in front of me to support a great initiative.
